Event Description

10-10 in 2010: Selling the 2010 Census to a Reluctant Audience

How do you create a marketing campaign to explain why you should give the U.S. Government information about yourself and do it in a fairly short time frame with practically no money for advertising to a very diverse audience? That was the challenge of the Houston Counts marketing effort of the 2010 Census.

Not only did Houston increase its response rate from ten years ago, but the team worked hard to overcome cultural, language and age barriers in order to get folks to understand the importance of answering the Census.

The Houston Counts team combined non-traditional outreach along with standard marketing and PR strategies to achieve their goal. In the end, the collaborative effort and teamwork between the City of Houston; its contractor, Vollmer Public Relations; numerous non-profits and organizations and hundreds of volunteers was recognized nationally by the U.S. Census Bureau and organizations such as The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights.

Many thanks to our sponsor for this event: Tracy Torma with Torma Communications, Houston's award-winning writing and communications team since 1983.
