Event Description

There is no such thing as “too much” communication, particularly during a company merger or acquisition. Communication is a necessary part of a successful integration strategy, as noted in the Houston Business Journal’s article When Words and Action Collide.

However, the content of the communication is truly key. Words that are left unsaid or are open to interpretation can be more powerful, and are often detrimental. A large contributor to the success of a merger or acquisition is the effective integration of the acquired company’s operations, which may not happen if company personnel become disengaged.

Connie Barnaba will use her human resources experience and change management research to show us:
  • Why many U.S. companies have poor performance within the first 12 months of a merger deal.
  • The key business elements involved during integrating two companies.
  • How to communicate effectively during these high-change, highly charged events.

About Connie Barnaba

Connie Barnaba is the founder and president of Barnaba & Associates, Inc., an independent consulting firm established in October 2002, specializing in effective change management.

T:   888-333-9107

A certified global professional in human resources, Connie has more than 20 years’ experience in human resource management, including change management experience with for profit and non-profit businesses, public and private sector employees, and in unionized and non-union work settings.   The inspiration for her consulting practice is the belief that the growing diversity of the U.S. workforce, globalization of U.S. businesses, and volatile economic climate will require the design and implementation of creative change and risk management strategies to ensure business agility and the effective execution of new business strategies.

Prior to establishing her consulting practice, Connie served as VP, HR Services operations, for Administaff, Inc., (recently rebranded as Insperity, Inc.) a Fortune 500 company  in Houston, listed on the Barron’s list of best-performing companies and the Forbes Platinum 400 list of the best big companies in America. With direct responsibility for customer relations management, she executed a strategy to convert a call center operation into a virtual HR service delivery system staffed by 200 professional service providers in markets across the US.  Her role included working with the Office of the General Counsel, the client, and the sales team to facilitate agreements to sensitive client non-compliance issues.

Her latest change initiative involves research on the topic of mergers and acquisitions to understand why the performance of the majority of US companies has been so consistently poor for longer than a decade with half losing value within a year following deal close.  After interviewing 100 M&A experts, she has written a book which she expects to be published later this year outlining her findings and offering a list of best practices for companies considering strategic M&A deals that require the integration of business operations.
